Christmas Markets with Viking

  • In the heart of Europe, you'll find a delightful surprise. Colorful Christmas markets all waiting to be explored. It's at Christmas markets like this one in Budapest that the spirit and the romance of the holidays come alive. I first discovered Europe's Christmas markets with my mother. We were looking for something different than the traditional winter break and have been coming back ever since, loving getting into the cozy ambiance of Europe at this time of year. we found the best way to move from one market to the next is to use Europe's original highways - the rivers. Onboard, it's a floating Christmas wonderland with inviting spaces festively decorated to reflect the spirit of the season. Unpack just once and enjoy the cities and villages of Europe coming to you. Sumptuous cuisine is yours at every meal. You can immerse yourself in activities or just enjoy the comfortable surroundings while gliding through the countryside. It's really like a fairy tale set in some of the continent's most interesting cities, with dramatic architecture as a backdrop. Vienna, Prague, and quaint villages like Passau, home of Germany's oldest gingerbread recipe. There's a peacefulness here and abundant smiles all around. It's almost as if people have forgotten about the normal hustle and bustle of daily life. If you're in a hurry, Europe's Christmas markets are not the place to be. But what's most surprising is that while the markets may appear similar, move closer and you quickly realize each one has its own character. Some have an intimate feel when others, such as in Budapest with its laser light show, are much bigger events. And I found tasty treats at every Christmas market. From Glühwein, the hot spiced wine which you find everywhere, to steaming crepe and local favorites like the traditional Hungarian cinnamon pastries. The craft items always catch my eye. They're handmade mostly by people from nearby towns. They make fun gifts and often come with an interesting story, like the prune families of Nuremberg, an idea dreamed up long ago by a father who could not afford to buy toys for his children for Christmas, so he made them prune people from dried fruits. Today, antique prune families are even collector's items. While you may not cross paths with the artists I've met, there are many others with stories to tell and delighted to share them. When you're ready to try something different for the holidays, join us in this winter wonderland. Viking. No one can show you the real Christmas markets like we can.

Witness the beauty, romance and spirit of the holidays come alive at Europe’s colorful Christmas markets when you join Viking on a festive river cruise during November or December.

On a Viking Christmas Market cruise, the journey is as remarkable as the destination.

Iconic Christmas Markets of the Rhine & Danube

While the spirit of Christmas is universal, each market boasts its own unique character, a reflection of the city and its local traditions. One of Viking’s most popular Christmas market itineraries allows you to explore the two rivers most famous for their festive celebrations: the Rhine and the Danube. You can also experience the merriment of the season with Viking exploring colorful Christmas markets in iconic cities across Germany, France, Austria, Hungary and beyond.

Festive Traditions Along the Rhine

A Christmas voyage on the Rhine feels like journeying through a storybook. The river winds past medieval castles, vineyard-laced hills, and villages that are even more charming under a dusting of snow.

In the great cities along the Rhine, the Christmas markets are legendary. Stand in awe before the renowned Cologne Cathedral, which provides a sky-high gothic backdrop to one of Germany’s largest and most beloved markets. In Strasbourg, the self-proclaimed "Capital of Christmas," you can wander through a city where French and German traditions blend to create a uniquely Alsatian holiday experience. From the intimate, cozy feel of the market in Koblenz to the historic charm of Heidelberg, a journey on the Rhine is a tour through the very heart of Christmas tradition.

Christmas Delights of the Danube

To sail the Danube during the holidays is to witness the grandeur of Imperial Europe dressed in its festive best. The river links some of the continent's most majestic capitals, from Budapest, Hungary, to Regensburg, Germany, cities that come alive with a fairy-tale atmosphere.

In Budapest, you can explore one of Europe’s most acclaimed Christmas markets with captivating light shows and unique Magyar crafts. The elegant city of Vienna hosts multiple markets, each with its own personality, set against a backdrop of ornate Habsburg architecture. Your voyage may also take you to quaint villages like Passau, home to Germany’s oldest gingerbread recipe, or the historic city of Nuremberg, where the tradition of "prune people"—delightful figures made from dried fruit—began centuries ago. A Danube Christmas cruise is an unforgettable journey through a winter wonderland of imperial scale.
